President’s Report
The Club capped off an event-filled half year by hosting the official opening of completed building Stages 4 & 5, Saturday 4th August. This was a very enjoyable evening with representatives from Sport & Recreation, Special Olympics ACT Region, ACT Gymnastics Association, AIS Gymnastic Program and the first gym classes (1978) attending. Special guests pictured left to right below, Les and Dahlia Sharp, founders of the Club and Peggy Liddick, Women’s National Coach, cut ribbons to the extensions. Highlights were CCGC’s own aqua Cartwheel Cocktail and gymsport displays: cheer stunts, gymnastics and hip hop! Thanks must be recorded to the Club’s parent and Committee volunteers who not only showed great hospitality on the night but have helped bring this and other projects to fruition over many years.

Using our new spaces from this term are Canberra Diving Academy (occasional Saturday afternoons) and the adult Circus & Acrobatic Skills group, Monday and Wednesday evenings. WELCOME!

Finally, it is pleasing to hear news of continued participation and enjoyment in the Club’s external classes and school programs – thank you coaches and organisers.
Mary Hewett

National Stream (MAG & WAG) News
This year ACT gymnastics took away 14 gymnasts to Nationals held in Brisbane in early July. 12 of these gymnasts were from Canberra City and 2 from Southern Canberra.

We had a brand new level 7 team (Jemma Patat, Vanessa Schimizzi, Keira Hopkinson, Katrina Le, Emma Carroll and Titch Hall) who were all quite nervous to be competing but performed brilliantly placing 4th overall. Out of the six, Emma, Katrina
and Keira made it to finals and again did very well. Emma placed 4th on bars and 4th overall.

The level 8 team (Kaitlin Dawson, Emily Glover, Brittany Thomas and Melissa Orr) all had a great comp and they too came 4th. All our level eights made it into finals and had great individual results. Kaidi came 5th on floor, Britt came 3rd on bars and 6th overall, and Mel managed to come 1st on beam, 2nd on floor, 4th on vault and 3rd overall!

Our level 10 team (Laura Peel, Nicole Alexander, Phillipa Dickens and Elise Wright) placed 3rd, easily beating Queensland – our new rival state!! Laura, Pip and Elise all competed in finals with both Laura and Elise placing on bars; Laura 4th Elise 6th.

I think I can safely say we all had a blast especially when it came to …‘re-arranging’ rooms!

I would like to say well done to all of you guys you all did so well and you should be happy! I would also like to put out a huge THANKYOU to all the coaches, judges and chaperones who came along and made it the trip it was.

Elyse Wright – ACT Team Captain

The National Level 1 – 3 WAG gymnasts have just competed at two ACT Competitions. The first competition was in July and the second was on 12 August. Congratulations to all CCGC gymnasts on their great performance at the competitions and good luck for your grading on 26 August.

ACT State Stream News (MAG & WAG)
The ACT held its first competition for all State Levels
1 – 4 gymnasts at the end of Term 2. The State competitions are an opportunity for all of the gymnasts participating to demonstrate to family and friends what they are learning in their classes. It is a fun time for everyone involved with each gymnast leaving the competition with a ribbon highlighting their overall score and the apparatus they received the highest score on. Congratulations to all of the CCGC gymnasts who participated and a big thank you to all of the CCGC coaches who attended and helped to make the experience a positive one for the gymnasts. The State Level 1 – 4 Grading will be held on 16 September, good luck to all of the participating gymnasts.

Good luck also to the State Level 5 – 10 gymnasts competing in their first competition for the year on 19 August.

Kindergym News
What a great year the program has had so far. Enthusiastic coaches, athletes and parents have guaranteed a positive time for all. Term two saw our annual Kinder/Gym challenge event. All participants were able to show off their skills and then at the end they were presented with a medal, certificate and a huge applause. Throughout the day over 180 gymnasts, 12 coaches and hundreds of relatives and friends passed through our gym doors. All money raised on the day has been put back in to the gym, it’s great facilities and programs.

We have had a busy year with many themes such as, Dinosaurs, Transport, Autumn and Olympic Sports. The last week of term 2 had a Nursery Rhyme Theme, for this the children were asked to come in their pyjamas and donate a gold coin to SIDS. We managed to raise $182 and the coaches loved wearing their pyjamas to work for the week.

Our biggest thrill as Kindergym coaches is seeing each individual child achieve their best. We look forward to the rest of the year, with many more themes, laughs and adventures guaranteed.

Naomi Nye – Kindergym Coordinator

New Programs
GymABLE – Schools – CCGC was successful in receiving a grant from ACT Sport & Rec. to deliver a 5 week pilot program to two classes from Turner Primary School’s Special Learning Centre.

Congratulations
To Jess Donahue and Jake Silvestro who have successfully completed their level 1 coaching course and assessment and are now Qualified Level 1 Coaches.

Term 2 Coach of the Term
Congratulations again to Jess Donahue who is Term 2’s coach of the term.

CCGC Carpark
During the club’s peak hours, please take care in the club’s busy Belconnen carpark when dropping off children or picking them up. The club does ask if all parents could walk their children, especially younger ones, through the gym’s doors before and after classes to prevent children being in the carpark alone.

White lines designating car spaces will be appearing in the club’s carpark in the near future.

Gym Areas
Recently you would have noticed that two bright orange signs have been erected informing parents and spectators that only coaches and gymnasts are allowed in the gym areas during gymnastic classes. Please follow these instructions for everyone’s safety.

Parents please note that children are not permitted in the gym areas or on the equipment before classes commence. Please feel free to wait in the foyer, in front of the office or sit upstairs in the viewing gallery.

Can you also ensure that your child does not sit on the white fence in the foyer if they are waiting for their class. There are hard and sharp obstacles near by and we do not want anyone to fall and hurt themselves.

Gymnast Checklist

Parents can you please ensure that your child has remembered to do the following before the beginning of each class.

1.      Water bottle.
All water bottles to be placed in the white pigeon
holes in the foyer to prevent accidents going up & down the stairs.

2.    Removed socks & shoes.

3.      Removed all jewellery.

4.      Secured personal belongings.

5.      Tied back long hair.

6.      Placed rubbish in the bin.

      7.    Brought their good listening skills.
